Alan Lee is the founder and Managing Partner of August Consulting Pte Ltd, a specialised corporate and financial communications firm
Prior to setting up August Consulting in May 2002, Mr Lee was Managing Director of Scotchbrook-BSMG Worldwide in Singapore and was also a member of Scotchbrook-BSMG Worldwide Asia Executive Committee.
In that position, he was responsible for managing the Singapore office as well as directing the firm's corporate and financial communications practice. He was also responsible for developing the business of the Company and the Scotchbrook-BSMG Group in South East Asia.
Throughout his 14 years as a public relations practitioner, he had worked closely with client's senior management to develop and execute corporate communications strategies which enhanced their corporate position and reputation.
At August Consulting, Mr Lee, who specialises in corporate and financial communications and issues management, works with a number of listed and unlisted corporations in Singapore including Creative Technology Ltd, Beyonics Technology Ltd, Fraser & Neave Group, BioTreat Technology, SIA Engineering Company Ltd and Tee Yih Jia Food Manufacturing Pte Ltd.
Mr Lee has more than 15 years' experience as a financial journalist in Malaysia and Singapore, two years as PR consultant in Malaysia and two years as an investment banker.
He started his career as a financial journalist in 1974 with the New Straits Times Group in Malaysia specialising in the coverage and reporting of corporate and financial news.
He left the NST Group in 1977 to join Burson-Marsteller in Kuala Lumpur as a PR consultant. During his two years with B-M, he handled the corporate communications programme for companies such as Guinness, Bank of America, Malaysian Tobacco Company, Ericsson and Pacific Bank.
In 1979, Mr Lee returned to journalism, joining The Star Newspaper in Kuala Lumpur as Assistant Business Editor, with responsibilities to both write and edit the business section of the national newspaper.
Mr Lee moved to Singapore in early 1982 to join The Business Times, a business and financial newspaper, first as Deputy Companies Editor from 1982 to 1984; Companies Editor from 1984 to 1990, and assumed the post of Executive Editor (News) in 1990. During his term with The Business Times, he directed the newspaper's coverage of corporate and financial news not only in Singapore but also the region.
Mr Lee also represented the Singapore Press Holdings Group as a Committee Member of the Singapore National Productivity Awards Selection Committee (1987 to 1990) and Committee Member and Deputy Chairman of the Singapore Businessman of the Year Award Committee (1986 to 1990).
Mr Lee switched to investment banking in August 1990 with his appointment as Vice President with Royal Trust Merchant Bank which specialised in private banking, fund management and corporate finance.
He left the bank in May 1992 to set up, in joint venture with Fleishman-Hillard Inc. of the US, an international public relations consultancy based in Singapore. He headed the Singapore office as its first Managing Director. In November 1995, the three founding shareholders of Fleishman-Hillard Scotchbrook Asia bought out the minority interest of F-H Inc. and renamed the company Scotchbrook Communications International which has offices in Hong Kong, Singapore, and China. In 2000, Scotchbrook Communications Group was acquired by BSMG Worldwide.
Mr Lee was Vice-President of the Institute of Public Relations Singapore (IPRS) for two years (1993-1995). He is currently a Board Member of the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA).
